Call for Adam Silver to Resign as NBA Commissioner

The NBA faces growing fan dissatisfaction under Commissioner Adam Silver's leadership since 2014. Many longtime viewers express frustration that the league has become less engaging and trustworthy. Key concerns include extensive gambling partnerships, perceptions of reduced competitive balance in the regular season, and inconsistent officiating that questions the integrity and purity of the game.

 

The league has formed prominent partnerships with betting companies like DraftKings and FanDuel, incorporating promotions into broadcasts, apps, and operations to drive revenue. While these arrangements have increased income, they have aligned with notable integrity concerns. In October 2025, federal authorities indicted 34 individuals in schemes tied to illegal sports betting, money laundering, and organized crime connections. Among those charged were NBA-affiliated figures such as Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former player/assistant coach Damon Jones, with allegations involving non-public information for prop bets and activity spanning 11 states with tens of millions of dollars implicated. These followed the 2024 lifetime ban of Jontay Porter for performance manipulation linked to betting and recalled the 2007 Tim Donaghy referee scandal.

 

Former player Enes Freedom publicly called for Silver's resignation on X, arguing that the league cannot heavily profit from gambling ties and then express surprise at resulting scandals. Bipartisan leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee (and later Senate Commerce Committee) requested briefings from Silver on the NBA's betting relationships and protective measures. Various media reports and fan discussions have highlighted these events as raising questions about oversight and the game's integrity.

 

Fans also point to factors that make the regular season feel less compelling, including load management and an extended schedule, which some argue dilute excitement and fairness. Additionally, many criticize officiating inconsistencies, particularly with the travel rule, which fans often describe as a joke. Star players appear to receive a special whistle, with travels and carries frequently overlooked for high-profile athletes while called more strictly on others. This perceived bias contributes to broader doubts about the integrity and purity of competition, as rules seem applied unevenly and the game feels less fair.

 

Viewership trends reflect mixed signals amid this dissatisfaction. The 2024-25 regular season saw a 2% decline on major networks (averaging 1.53 million viewers), part of longer-term lower averages compared to earlier decades. For 2025-26, national games averaged around 1.80 million through the All-Star break, up 16% from the prior comparable period and the highest at that stage since 2018, aided by new broadcast partners like NBC. Reach has risen in some reports. However, many fans attribute ongoing disengagement to the issues above rather than solely to platform changes, and public commentary shows increasing concern over gambling's influence and officiating fairness across leagues.

 

Record revenues from media and betting deals represent clear successes, but sustained fan trust, perceived fairness, and the game's purity remain essential for the league's long-term health.

 

We, the undersigned fans (including many who have followed the NBA for years), former players, and concerned stakeholders, respectfully call on the NBA Board of Governors to demand Adam Silver's immediate resignation (or removal if necessary) and pursue new leadership that places competitive integrity, consistent officiating, and fan experience as top priorities, ahead of business expansion.

 

The NBA deserves a commissioner dedicated to restoring confidence in the sport's fairness, purity, and appeal. Meaningful change is required to address these concerns.
