The Issue

I am a student who attends school in Central Texas. After hearing the news about the new electronics ban, I was distraught. Hearing many testimonies of concern from friends, classmates, and parents made me realize that something needs to happen — something needs to change.

This ban prohibits all communicative devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and more. It also bans all headphones, whether wired or wireless. These devices must be out of sight and not in use throughout the entire school day, including passing periods and lunch.

These restrictions have the potential to put students in danger. In the event of an emergency — either at school or at home — students would not be able to contact their parents or trusted guardians in a timely or respectful manner.

The ban is especially unnecessary during passing periods and lunch, times meant for socializing and communication, which classrooms often do not allow.

The headphone ban is also troubling. I personally know students who use headphones in class to help them concentrate, especially in loud or overstimulating environments. With this ban, those students will lose a helpful resource that supports their focus and productivity.

This policy, among many other issues, is deeply problematic. Our goal is to push for a revision of the ban to make it more reasonable and flexible. And if that is not possible, then we at least want our voices to be heard and to make a meaningful impact on our community.

Please help me stand up for our public school system and support the many Texas students who will be affected by this in the coming years.
