Call for a moratorium on new speed bumps

Call for a moratorium on new speed bumps
The Issue
Living in Haiku, navigating our streets has become a distressing daily ordeal with the proliferation of speed bumps. Each trip to town subjects us to the discomfort of 30 jolting bumps, a reality that is not only nerve wracking but poses serious safety hazards. Imagine the urgency of fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles being hindered by these impediments – a scenario that compromises emergency response times and threatens lives. Envision being in an ambulance, in pain, being tossed with each bump; this is a grim reality that residents like us face.
Moreover, the installation of these speed bumps was executed without the input from the very people it affects the most – the residents of Haiku. It's infuriating to think that such significant changes were made without a community dialogue or consent. Speed bumps are not only nerve wracking; they wear out our brakes and shocks and drastically degrade gas mileage. Now we find ourselves going through Paia to avoid the bumps. This adds more traffic though an already congested area.
We propose:
- an immediate moratorium on the installation of new speed bumps.
- The county needs mechanisms for removing nuisance or unnecessary bumps.
- An effective alternative would be the installation of strategically placed traffic cameras. These would be a deterrent to speeding without the jostling effects of the bumps.
- Furthermore, an increase in speed limits in appropriate zones would improve traffic flow and discourage the dangerous act of illegal passing. This strategy could enhance the safety and fluidity of our roads without compromising the structural integrity of our vehicles or endangering emergency services.
We invite our community members to rally behind this cause for change. By lending your signature, you voice your opposition to the indiscriminate and excessive placement of speed bumps and advocate for safer, more efficient roadways in Haiku. Let's put the brakes on speed bumps and push the pedal on smart, effective traffic management solutions. Sign the petition today and help restore sanity and safety to our streets.
