The Issue

As a resident of Midtown, I have personally witnessed the rise in crime within our neighbourhood. Incidents such as vehicle break-ins, arson, and violent crimes have been distressingly frequent, and many of these crimes have been linked to the homeless, drug addicted population. With the proposal to establish a homeless shelter in Midtown, it's crucial that the voices of the local residents, who are directly affected by these changes, be heard and prioritized. Up until now, only the voices of city councillors and organizations with something to gain from this shelter have been heard and entertained.

Midtown is predominantly a residential neighbourhood where families as well as single lower income people have chosen to settle for its once quiet and safe environment. Introducing a large homeless shelter in the area is likely to attract more individuals who may contribute to these problems, further exacerbating the issue and potentially endangering residents. It is not just a matter of maintaining property values or aesthetics, but ensuring the safety and security of our community. This location at Exhibition Park does not have the wrap around services that should be present in a location a homeless shelter is put, ie) there are no medical or mental health services in the area, no services to help homeless people find work, no branch of police to ensure the safety of the neighbourhood, there isn't proper transportation in the area, such as a nearby bus stop if homeless people need access to transportation.

While the intention behind the establishment of a homeless shelter is indeed noble, the location is not suitable for such a facility. The residents of Midtown should have a direct say in matters that impact our daily lives and community wellbeing. Rather than leaving this decision solely in the hands of city councillors and the mayor, who have not listened to the concerns of Midtown residents, it is only fair and democratic to hold a referendum, allowing the residents of Midtown to decide.

A community-driven decision will not only foster a sense of empowerment among residents but will also ensure that the chosen course of action is a reflection of the community’s collective will. By signing this petition, you are supporting a democratic approach: giving the residents of Midtown our rightful voice in deciding the establishment of a homeless shelter in our neighbourhood. Your signature can help bring this vital referendum into action. Please sign to show your support for Midtown's right to determine our own future.
