Calisthenics park for Sydney
The Issue
The Problem
Calisthenics and bodyweight sport has evolved a lot in past years, worldwide there are over 50 million people practicing them. Especially in the last 2 years, due to gyms being closed that number is skyrocketing.
Despite the increase in participation and Calisthenic parks in other countries, the provision of specialist training facilities in Sydney is still non-existent. This limits the growth of the sport in Australia and discourages new people to start training it.
Regardless, there is an existing active community and several competitions have taken place in Sydney, so far 2 in 2022. But sadly and due to the lack of a proper public park to perform them, the organization has been a very hard and expensive task, therefore limiting the reach and involvement of the community.
Existing parks were built in the past, but there was never a communication between the council and the calisthenics community, resulting in facilities not meeting the minimum criteria that the existing level requires and ending in a low usage by the community.
Proposal
The installation of a specialist calisthenics training facility in public space represents a very cost-effective means of promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. A facility would require minimal space and maintenance yet appeal to a large number of local users.
A good park will open up the door to organizing competitions for everyone. Existing competitions need a private gym or venue and are both expensive and not accessible for most people in the community. We believe that calisthenics should be available for everyone and people should not require to spend their money on practicing sport or competing in it. This will also attract international athletes and put Australia on the map.
A real calisthenic park will make a positive impact on the local community, encourages bodyweight exercises, and teaches people how to do it. It’ll bring them together, regardless of their age, gender, religion, sexuality, social status, and fitness level. A gathering of people from all walks of life and ages engaged in physical movement purely for the abundance of health benefits, and they’ll be having so much fun that they won’t realize they are working out. A community can grow each day by welcoming new and different people. Community brings people together, makes them take care of themselves and the people around them and everybody can learn so much from that experience.
The main benefit of these outdoor gyms is the affordability and the social connectedness it brings. Outdoor gyms are a free facility for the public and offer an alternative to the traditional expensive gym memberships. It also offers a new environment for people of similar interests to meet with one another and build a relationship.
By creating a positive space for people to gather together and exercise, have fun, connect and work towards a common goal we’re creating a community – one with a profoundly positive impact.
Data
The 2014 Physical activity guidelines recommend that people aged 18-64 years should undertake around 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week. Statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that only 27.2% of Australians met these criteria in 2020-2021 https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/health/health-conditions-and-risks/physical-activity/2020-21
This report by the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found that those living in areas of disadvantage were less likely to engage in physical activity and to meet the recommended guidelines.
Users of outdoor gyms expressed that using the equipment helped to treat a variety of health issues such as frozen shoulder, post-surgery rehabilitation, spinal problems, and pain. It was also expressed by the user’s that they found that these outdoor gyms help facilitated the improvement of physical strength and general fitness https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5923632/
