We dream of a day without waste... we know you have that dream, too. Now we are even closer to making this vision a reality.
The California Circular Economy and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (aka SB 54 and AB 1080) passed in the California State Senate and Assembly this week. We have crossed the biggest hurdle, and the bills have reached the halfway mark on their unprecedented journey to becoming law.
First, we want to say thanks. We asked for your help and you acted. You shared this petition, you called your reps, you invested your time. We are now closing in on 250,000 signatures thanks to YOU.
Second, we want to help you stay informed. An amendment was made to the bills to streamline the reduction process. The policies will now include a top ten priority list of single-use plastic products. The items that make it on the list will be determined by litter surveys conducted in California between 2017-2020. These top ten items need to be addressed first by manufacturers and retailers. However, the policies still call for an overall 75% waste stream reduction in all single-use packaging and products (not just plastic!) by 2030.
We will continue to keep you in the loop as more progress is made. Please spread this good news. Let’s keep the pressure on!
