Dear friends:
As many of you probably know, starting on the night of October 8th, several Northern California counties (particularly Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Solano counties) became another Ground Zero for Climate Change, experiencing the costliest fires in U.S. history, and one of the deadliest.
One of the main 17 fires, the Tubbs Fire, that started near Calistoga, reached Santa Rosa (Sonoma County) in about 3 hours, and in a few hours destroyed about 1,800 homes in the Fountain Grove neighborhood and about 1,500 homes in the Coffey Park neighborhood, which became part of the almost 9,000 structures the fires burned in all the counties involved. For over one week it was literally hell.
Among the suffering and losses that came from those fires, a strong impulse to rebuild and transform for stronger, more resilient, healthier and more sustainable communities has shown up as a positive consequence of these catastrophic events.
We are proposing, in our own geographical local area, that adopting Climate Change Action as the core organizing principle of our societies and economies, is essential to achieving that goal, starting with official, public and detailed enough, Climate Change Major Disaster Declarations from our governments.
To that effect we submitted an opinion article in the main newspaper in Sonoma County that was published last Sunday, November 5th. Below is the link to it.
May our experience motivate you to achieve full Climate Change Action mobilizations in your area as fast as possible. Please try not to wait to become another Climate Change Ground Zero like we have done. A lot of suffering and losses can be prevented if we are prepared before the disasters happen.
