Dear friends: In our campaign to gain official Climate Change Major Disaster Declarations we have emphasized that California (and the rest of the world) must immediately and massively deploy all resources to RESTORE the Climate to a previous sustainable state and to ADAPT to protect humanity, environment and property from Climate Change-related catastrophes to come. Focusing on the ADAPTATION component of our strategy, we can confidently say that it was totally absent in the hurricane Harvey catastrophic event. Outstanding examples are: There was no massive evacuation ordered from the areas that were highly likely to get flooded despite the certainty of the event forecast several days before the first landing of hurricane Harvey. The governor of Texas just said that it would be a good idea to move away from the Southern coast of Texas. The mayor of Houston told the residents “to stay put”. He said that “it would have been “too dangerous” to have millions of residents on the road” (They are safer under water, aren’t they?). Despite the frequency of flooding events in Southern Texas (Harvey is the third 100-year-or-more type of flood in 3 years), the drainage grid has not been retrofitted to minimize the damage and deaths resulting from them. Houston stands out as having a disastrous drainage grid that dates back to the Depression. The attached article exposes the situation in Houston. This time catastrophe struck Texas and other parts of the South for the last 6 days, with locations surpassing 50 inches of rain during that period, but the next extreme events will happen anywhere else, including the very same place where we live. There is no place to hide from Climate Change. Without massive and immediate action humanity and the planet do not have a future.
