Hello everyone!
First, we would like to extend our gratitude to each and every one of you for signing, sharing, and offering so many kind words. When this small group of kids decided that we would stand with our friend, we had no idea the immense numbers of support that would come. We are very thankful that you all have proven that people do care and support Kami, as well as any current or future students who may want to express themselves differently.
Second, we would like to say that we are not going to give up. We would like to, at the minimum, see a change in the rules which will allow students to express themselves in any way for the yearbook, wall, or other senior activities. We want every student to not have to feel the way Kami did, especially after four long years in high school, the memories, choices, and friendships we made during such a pivotal life moment should not come to an end by the opinions and hate from someone else. Your teachers and school administrators should not be bullies.
Lastly, we would again like to express our thanks and to say that we will hopefully have a formal response from the school board on Monday or Tuesday next week. We also have received a generous amount of support from the Central Station, a local Dance Club, and Bar that has become, in a way, a haven for members of the LGBT community. We have continued to stay in touch with KSLA, a local news station, to ensure that Kami's story will be shared. KSLA has told us the story will not be aired until the school board releases a response, which again will hopefully be soon.
Thanks to all of you, even if this senior year has turned sour, we are sure that there are always going to be people out there to help and support you no matter what. We greatly appreciate it, especially from our classmates and those who live in the area. We love seeing that not everyone in the community shares the same beliefs.
We are awaiting the end of spring break to hopefully meet with our principal and the school board to negotiate our demands.
Thanks,
Southwood Students.
