Bunnings, Provide a Fully Biodegradable Trimmer Line Option for Australia

The issue

To: Michael Schneider, Managing Director of Bunnings Group, and Ben McIntosh, Chief Commercial Officer of Bunnings

We, the undersigned, call on Bunnings to introduce a fully biodegradable trimmer line option for sale in all Australian stores.

Why is this important?

Every year, copious amounts of microplastics are collectively released into the environment using traditional plastic trimmer lines. These microplastics do not degrade and contribute to the growing problem of plastic pollution, harming wildlife and ecosystems.

In contrast, biodegradable trimmer lines, such as GreenLine, break down into natural substances like humus, water, and CO2 within 24 months, without leaving harmful microplastics behind.

Microplastics and nanoplastics can enter our bodies through food, water, or air. Once inside, they may cause inflammation or carry harmful chemicals, which could affect our health over time. Scientists are still studying the full impact, but early findings are concerning.

Bunnings is a leader in the Australian hardware market, and by offering a biodegradable trimmer line, you can set a positive example for environmental responsibility. This change would reduce lawn care's environmental impact and align with the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products.

What we are asking:

  • Introduce a fully biodegradable trimmer line option in all Bunnings stores across Australia.
  • Promote the environmental benefits of biodegradable trimmer lines to customers, encouraging them to make a more sustainable choice.
  • Commit to phasing out traditional plastic trimmer lines by 2031 in favour of biodegradable alternatives.

Join us by making a difference.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a more sustainable future for Australia. Together, we can reduce plastic pollution and protect our environment for future generations.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Anthony Lorenzo
