Build Syd Sherar park..a decade old promise

Build Syd Sherar park..a decade old promise

The issue

We propose that Central Coast Council build a park on the reserve land in Girraween Avenue Erina, to allow for our children to play safely and provide space for the residents and community to come together.

I have recently moved into the Erina area. I was excited by the prospect of Syd Sherar Park with sinage indicating its existence at the beginning of Dakara Ave. Once I started exploring the area the park was nowhere to be seen... This so called park is purely just a empty piece of reserve. I decided to reach out to council to ask them what the plans were for the park, given the signage on the street. Councils reply was that the former Gosford Council decommissioned the park at least a decade ago due to the constrained nature of the park. At this time, Gosford were planning to prioritise larger community parks which resulted in small pocket parks being taken offline.

The council member also mentioned they scanned Council's GIS layer and there doesn't appear to be a obvious parcel of land to potentially develop as a local park.

I do not understand why the reserve land cannot be used to build a small park and the fact that small pocket parks had been taken offline is sad and unacceptable in my opinion. These small parks are equally important as large parks and the community should not suffer because the former council made poor financial and planning decisions.

All we want is some swings, slides, and climbing equipment that is built on a soft fall surface with some shade and seating.  We are not asking for an elaborate multi million dollar park to be built...

Dakara Ave, Girraween Ave, Tourak Ave, Kuburra Road and the surrounding roads are filled with lots of young families so a park in the area would greatly benefit our community. These streets are also off the main road and most of them do not have footpaths or if they do they seem to stop half way down the street! Having a park in the area would provide a space for kids to play and enjoy the outdoors safely.

If you're a resident of the surrounding streets of Dakara Ave, Toorak Avenue, Kuburra Road and beyond, or even just a member of the central coast community that support the idea of having a park built on the coast then please sign our petition today!

Thank you for taking the time to read and support this proposal.
