Build Safe Pedestrian Bridges on East Campus Road
The Issue
Every day, hundreds of people, including myself, can be seen crossing East Campus Road, near Joe Frank, at the University of Georgia. This constant foot traffic highlights an urgent need for a safe pedestrian crossing solution. Ensuring pedestrian safety is paramount, yet the current setup of only crossing at designated crosswalks near the road leads to significant detours and up to an extra 30 minutes added to our daily routes. This is both an inconvenience and a safety hazard, as many continue to cross where there is no designated crosswalk.
The university has suggested adhering strictly to existing crosswalks, but this does not address the underlying problem of accessibility and time management. East Campus Road is a four-lane road, and simply adding more crosswalks is not a feasible or safe option given the volume and speed of traffic.
A practical and effective solution is the construction of pedestrian bridges along the busiest points of this road. Pedestrian bridges would not only ensure the safety of students and staff but also enhance the overall flow of traffic, reducing potential accidents and injuries. This solution aligns with successful initiatives at other universities (as well as other places on UGA's campus) where pedestrian bridges have greatly improved campus safety and efficiency.
By signing this petition, we can urge the University of Georgia to take immediate and decisive action to invest in the construction of pedestrian bridges over East Campus Road. This is an investment in the safety and well-being of our university community. Sign this petition to show your support for creating a safer campus environment for all.
