On April 13th 2026 at 3 PM, a tragic collision took the life of Lincoln Sabini, a beloved member of the Davis and Sacramento communities. While riding his bike to work at UC Davis, Lincoln was struck by a car and killed on a dangerous stretch of Hutchinson Drive. Lincoln was more than just a victim of this collision; he was a cherished friend to many within the cycling, student, art, fashion, and farming communities and a 2nd year undergrad at UC Davis. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, and in his memory, we must take action to ensure such tragedies do not happen again.
Hutchinson Drive, located on the UC Davis campus, has been the site of two deadly bike/vehicle collisions in the last four years. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to protect cyclists. Hutchinson Drive is a 45 mph road with no protected bike lanes, no street lights, and no bus route or public transit options. The road connects to numerous UC Davis campus and research facilities (including Bee Bio Haven, Agronomy Field Headquarters, Primate Center, etc.) where students are often hired as lab technicians and interns. The road also borders high-density student housing which was built by the University in 2021. The current road conditions are simply insufficient, putting everyone who travels by bike at risk of a similar fate. It is imperative that we prioritize the safety of all road users, particularly those most vulnerable, such as cyclists.
One of the most effective ways to protect cyclists is by constructing separated, protected bike lanes. These lanes provide a safe space for cyclists, away from car traffic, thus significantly reducing the risk of accidents and fatalities. We demand a protected bike lane be built on Hutchinson Drive between West Village and Road 98 (Pedrick Rd), dedicated to our friend Lincoln Sabini. This change would not only honor Lincoln's legacy but would also serve to protect countless lives in the future including all who work and recreate in this popular and developing area of UC Davis's campus.
We also demand that the University develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for proactive bike safety research and infrastructure improvements into their 10-year plan, so that tragedies such as Lincoln's death can be prevented in the future. Every year, UC Davis publicizes and profits from its reputation as one of the most bike-friendly university campuses in the nation. We are holding the university accountable to this reputation and demanding that this image is reflected in the reality of bike safety on UCD campus.
Imagine a world where students, community members, and families can ride their bikes without fear. By signing this petition, you are advocating for safer roads and a safer community. Join us in urging the UC Davis administration and city officials to invest in the necessary infrastructure improvements to Hutchinson Drive and beyond. Help us protect the lives of cyclists and honor Lincoln Sabini's memory by providing a safer route for all.
Please sign and share this petition to make Hutchinson Drive safer for everyone.
