Dear North Yorkshire Councils' Councillors, Planning Department and Executives,

Re: Petition for a Full-Sized, Scarborough Town Square, 'Old Argos Site', Newborough, Scarborough.

In 2002, Scarborough Borough Council Fully Ratified a plan for a full-sized Scarborough Town Square at the 'Old Argos Site'.  At that time, this plan known as the 'Kissing Sleeping Beauty' project was only shelved due to site ownership issues and lack of available funds.  In the last 20 years the only alternative plans for this site, which is now 90% owned by our local authority, has been for student accommodation flatlets. These plans were objected to by local residents because of the Prime Town Centre location and it's inappropriate use in that location and were, thankfully, rejected. The building has currently been left a public eye sore for over 20 years and is detrimental to the overall, visitors and residents experience of the Scarborough Towns' Main retail Street.  This seriously adversely affects the local retail economy and is in an under utilised and deprived area of the Town.  The perfect opportunity now presents itself, for our new unitary authority, North Yorkshire Council, (with increased additional buying, loan, grant and development powers) to re-assess the sites' potential for a full sized Town Square to be developed, on a long overdue blight on our Main 'Town Centre' Street.  The potential uses of which, are unlimited, i.e. outdoor market, pop up events, entertainment and community usage etc.  A Town Square in this location would open up the area to public use and natural light and also show off the architecture of the Boyes building and would work in an ideal partnership with our newly rejuvenated Indoor Market Hall building.  I confirm that I am a Scarborough Resident or either living or working in Scarborough.  I am signing this Petition because I support the Petition Proposers call on our North Yorkshire Council for the development of a full sized Town Square at the 'Old Argos Site', Newborough, Scarborough.
