Build an Esports room at UConn

Build an Esports room at UConn
The Issue
UConn has a strong and rapidly growing gaming community, yet we still lack a dedicated space for students to gather, compete, and build a sustainable esports culture on campus. A campus esports room would create a central hub for community-building, teamwork, and digital engagement—supporting both casual players and serious competitors.
Esports clubs, tournaments, and gaming groups already attract significant student participation. With an appropriate space, UConn could support competitive teams, host campuswide events, and offer a safe, inclusive environment for all students interested in gaming, broadcasting, coaching, or digital media.
What an Esports Room Would Include:
- High-performance PCs and gaming consoles
- Reliable high-speed internet
- Ergonomic seating and collaborative space
- A small area for streaming, shoutcasting, or content creation
This setup would accommodate competitive practices, open-play hours, student-run events, and workshops on esports-related skills.
Why UConn Should Support This:
Many top universities already offer dedicated esports facilities, recognizing their impact on student life and campus identity. Creating one at UConn would:
- Boost student engagement, belonging, and retention
- Strengthen recruitment by appealing to a growing demographic
- Support academic and career pathways in technology, digital media, marketing, event management, and game development
- Create opportunities for sponsorships, partnerships, and university-level competitive representation
For many students, gaming is more than entertainment—it is a community, a creative outlet, and a healthy way to relieve stress. A centralized esports space would provide a safe, social environment where students can connect, collaborate, and represent UConn in a rapidly expanding field.
Next Steps:
After gathering student support, we plan to present this proposal to UConn Recreation and Student Activities to explore available space, equipment requirements, and potential funding or partnership opportunities.
Please sign and share to help make a dedicated esports room at UConn a reality.
