Purpose: We envision a safe, accepting, and empowering space for young people—a place where they can feel comfortable, welcomed, and invited. To create an inclusive environment that fosters connection, engagement in meaningful activities, without financial barriers, and access to vital resources that support youth development and well-being. A fun and vibrant hub to explore and try new interests and activities. 

Community Need: As our community sees numerous developments, it’s crucial to recognize that many of these projects do not include affordable activities or spaces for youth. This gap leaves young people with limited opportunities for engagement and personal growth. The centre will address these needs by providing accessible, affordable programs and activities that cater to all youth, ensuring they have a place to connect, learn, and thrive. 

Objectives:

• Provide After School Care: A structured environment for youth to relax, complete homework, and participate in enriching activities after school.
• Offer Holiday Camps: Organized programs during school breaks to keep youth engaged and active, with a variety of recreational and educational activities.
• Facilitate Workshops: Weekly workshops designed to teach new skills, encourage creativity, and promote personal growth.
• Create Dynamic Spaces: Develop facilities that cater to diverse interests and activities, ensuring every youth can find something they love.
• Create work and volunteering opportunities: Develop internship opportunities for youth to gain firsthand work experience, preparing them for future careers and fostering essential skills.  

Proposed Activities and Facilities:

• Indoor All-Wheels Park: skateboarding, BMX, & rollerblading
• Music Room for practice and collaboration.
• Dance Studio
• Multipurpose Room: Flexible space for community meetings, events, parties and gatherings. Can be also be used for photography, art lessons, creative projects, and social media content creation.
• Indoor Sports Court: A venue for sports, tournaments, and physical fitness.
• Games Area: foosball and air hockey tables for recreational fun and social interaction.
• Small Coffee Shop: A cozy space for youth to gather, relax, and socialize, fostering community connections.  

Rationale: Adolescents are facing a mental health crisis. Recent Research by the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health (CPMH) reveals alarming levels of depression and anxiety among adolescents in the Western Cape. Over 50% of 15- to 18-year-old adolescents experience elevated levels of depression symptoms, while more than 30% of adolescents aged between 10 and 14 are impacted. 

Teens have shifted their social interactions to smartphones and social media platforms. Simultaneously, they are spending less time in free play and are not granted the real-world independence necessary for their growth. The combination of this deep immersion in the virtual realm and increasing over protection in their everyday lives has contributed to a decline in the well-being of our youth.  

Community Impact: Establishing an affordable Youth Centre will not only enhance the lives of young people but also positively impact our entire community by:

• Reducing crime rates by providing constructive outlets for youth.
• Promoting mental health and well-being through supportive programs.
• Encouraging volunteerism and leadership among youth, fostering a sense of responsibility and community pride.
