Build a new skatepark in Bitts Park
The Issue
Bitts Park's skatepark has been like a second home to me and many others. As someone who has been skating for over 25 years, I've seen first hand how our skate park has gradually deteriorated over its 20-year existence. Everyone who skates here, from beginners to seasoned veterans, knows how critical well-maintained facilities are to enjoying skateboarding and progressing with the hobby. Sadly, the existing equipment is worn, the ramps have become unstable, and the current layout no longer meets the needs of today's skateboarders.
As the owner of the local skate shop, I have the responsibility to champion better facilities for our thriving skateboarding community. Every day, I talk to skateboarders who reminisce about the park's heyday or who simply wish for a safer and more versatile place to practice their skills. But it's not only about nostalgia—our vibrant community deserves a skatepark that matches its energy and potential. A modern skatepark would not only cater to current skateboarders but would also attract newcomers, boosting local interest, tourism, and economic activity.
Cumberland Council has a golden opportunity to foster community spirit and active lifestyles by investing in a new, bigger, and fit-for-purpose skatepark in Bitts Park. Imagine a space that includes updated ramps, innovative obstacles, and safe, durable materials, enabling us to host local events and competitions to encourage local talent and creativity. This project would rejuvenate a beloved landmark, providing a safe haven for skateboarders across Carlisle and beyond.
