Build a Healthier Fayetteville: Bring FREE Outdoor Fitness Parks to Our Communities!
What if improving our community's health started with something as simple as making exercise FREE and accessible to everyone?
In Fayetteville, North Carolina, many residents face barriers to maintaining their physical and mental well-being. Whether it's the cost of gym memberships, limited access to exercise equipment, transportation challenges, or a lack of safe recreational spaces, opportunities to live healthier should never be determined by someone's income or ZIP code.
It's time to invest in prevention, not just intervention.
My name is Lahmi Simmons, founder of Buzzz.Motivation, a community wellness initiative dedicated to empowering individuals through physical fitness, mental wellness, education, and community engagement.
I am calling on the City of Fayetteville, Parks and Recreation, and community partners to support the development of a FREE outdoor calisthenics and fitness park by upgrading an existing public park, with the long-term goal of expanding these opportunities into additional neighborhoods.
Why does Fayetteville need this?
1. Reduce Health Disparities and Promote Health Equity
Everyone deserves access to opportunities that support a healthier life, regardless of age, income, or socioeconomic background. Free outdoor fitness equipment can help remove financial barriers to exercise, encourage physical activity, and support efforts to prevent chronic conditions such as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.
2. Give Our Youth a Positive Outlet
Our young people need more safe, accessible spaces to build confidence, discipline, leadership, and meaningful relationships. A community fitness park can provide opportunities for mentorship, organized workouts, positive peer interaction, and constructive activities that help reduce exposure to negative influences.
3. Support Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being
Physical activity is more than building muscle. Exercise can help reduce stress, improve mood, support emotional regulation, and strengthen self-esteem. A welcoming outdoor fitness space can also foster social connection and a sense of belonging.
4. Build Stronger Families and Communities
Imagine parents exercising alongside their children, teenagers participating in fitness challenges, and older adults staying active through accessible movement programs. A free outdoor fitness park would create opportunities for people of different generations and fitness levels to come together.
5. Invest in Wellness Before Crisis
We cannot continue to focus solely on responding to health and community challenges after they occur. We must also invest in environments that encourage healthier decisions, positive habits, and community connection before problems escalate.
What are we asking the City of Fayetteville to do?
We are requesting that city leadership:
-Evaluate an existing public park for the installation of free outdoor calisthenics and accessible fitness equipment.
-Explore partnerships with organizations such as AARP, FitLot, local businesses, and community wellness advocates to identify funding opportunities.
-Prioritize accessibility, underserved neighborhoods, and equitable community participation.
-Support free community wellness programming, including youth mentorship, beginner fitness classes, and exercise opportunities for older adults.
-Develop a long-term vision for expanding outdoor fitness opportunities throughout Fayetteville.
A healthier Fayetteville begins when we make wellness accessible, encourage positive community engagement, and give residents the tools to take ownership of their health.
This initiative is about giving a teenager somewhere positive to go after school. It's about helping a parent improve their health without another monthly bill. It's giving an older adult an opportunity to remain active and connected, while creating a community where wellness is not a privilege, but an opportunity available to ALL.
