The issue

Our basketball association, Hobart Phoenix, is 35 years old, has over 750 members and yet we have no home. We need your help!

In Southern Tasmania, the community is passionate about basketball but lacks the facilities to fully embrace this sport. There isn't a single community basketball court in the Local Government Area of Tasmania's Capital City.  It is embarrassing for the State and the Country and grossly unjust for the local residents!

Basketball Tasmania's recent independently commissioned Facilities Strategy report indicates that Tasmania as a whole is in excess of 30 basketball courts short of meeting demand.  It goes further to explicitly state that nowhere is more lacking in courts and club homes than the greater Hobart region.

We have worked tirelessly with Basketball Tasmania and the Hobart City Council over the last 24 months to get this project off the ground!  We're excited to say that we now have:

  • Architectural plans and 3d concept designs
  • Quantity Surveyed costings
  • Agreement from Hobart City Council to provide a long term lease at New Town Bay
  • A DA ready for Lodgment
  • A hoard of keen basketballers, volunteers and officials ready to fill the new stadium!

This much needed community basketball stadium would not only provide a home for our association but also create an inclusive, indoor, sporting facility, social space, bar and function room for all residents to enjoy across many sports and activities.

It would de-pressurize other facilities in Tasmania's South like Kingborough, Moonah and Clarence and provide their residents with better access to their own facilities which are currently overrun with players predominantly from Greater Hobart.

Let's give our residents the chance they deserve to pursue their passion for basketball and other indoor sports right here at home!

Please sign this petition today and help us gain government support to fund the project!
