Last December, in light of Brock University’s apparent desire to withdraw as sole operator of the Rodman Hall Art Centre, the Rodman Hall Advisory Board, which oversees and advises Brock on the operation of Rodman Hall Art Centre, created the Rodman Hall Coalition. This Coalition of volunteers includes members of the Rodman Hall Alliance, Brock faculty and staff, and members of the Art Gallery Niagara group.
Since January the Coalition has been meeting, researching and making recommendations to assist in determining the future of Rodman Hall. The Coalition's aim is to find solutions that ensure the excellence of this federally recognized art museum, continue the public programming and classes, while preserving this property as a public asset for citizens and visitors to the region.
The Coalition is utilizing the 2015 Barlow Report, commissioned by the university, as a workable conceptual framework for shared community funding of Rodman Hall. This overarching plan, which, once implemented, will establish the museum as an independent non-profit entity sustained by core stakeholder partners, including Brock, the City of St. Catharines and others.
As the Coalition makes progress toward defining future aspirations for Rodman Hall, we are learning from the experience of similar public art museums, especially those who thrive on strong, mutually beneficial community partnerships.
We are currently clarifying available options for improving community engagement, appropriate governance, and well informed planning that will enable Rodman Hall to successfully transition to an independent organization. Simultaneously, we are seeking to build trust and channels of communication between ourselves, Rodman Hall and Brock senior administration.
The Coalition is currently planning a series of public consultations and an online survey to be announced in the near future. The input and participation of the public in this process will be critical in informing the future of the Rodman Hall Art Centre.
