The Issue

Kate Greenhalgh, who both events and show jumps, offered winter livery. However, she did not provide the horses in her care with any food at all, despite them being either in foal broodmares (owned by Chris Stone and Gemma Tattersall) or youngsters.
She lied, telling the vet she couldn’t remember who owned the emaciated broodmares, and that the bay had severe rain scald as the owner was “old fashioned and didn’t believe in rugs”. The owner was Gemma Tattersall, who is in fact sponsored by a rug company. She showed no remorse.
The body of the dead 2 year old was sent to the RVC for post mortem. This revealed that he had, purely and simply, died of emaciation. He had looked an ideal weight in the owner’s photos just 6 weeks previously.
Another two year old had a crippling foot abscess, seen by neither farrier nor vet, on 3 legs in a muddy field, for 5 days. The infection tracked both up the leg and into the pedal bone. He survived after late intervention.
The mare lost her foal.
Kate Greenhalgh pleaded not guilty until just a few weeks before the case, when she changed her plea to guilty.
So she has to pay a fine, serve a 12 week imprisonment suspended for 12 months, and 120 hours unpaid work. No remorse. No ban. She can continue “looking after” other people’s horses.

PLEASE STOP Kate Greenhalgh from ever being in charge of any horse ever again.

PLEASE BAN Kate Greenhalgh from competing in any BHS, BE, BSJ or any other competition.
