Bring the Classic Dragon Ball Z Visual Style Back to Dragon Ball Super
The Issue
Regarding the petition:
We are asking Toei Animation to consider bringing the visual style, artistic feeling, and more serious atmosphere of the classic 1990s Dragon Ball Z era into future Dragon Ball Super animation.
We are not asking for Dragon Ball Super to simply copy the old animation. We want the classic Dragon Ball identity to be combined with modern animation technology, production quality, and visual techniques.
We would love to see:
• Strong, detailed linework
• Classic cel-style shading
• More defined character designs and proportions
• More serious, mature, and imposing character designs
• Characters with a stronger and more somber presence, especially during serious moments
• More intense and dramatic facial expressions
• Powerful emotions that feel natural and impactful
• A darker and more serious visual atmosphere when the story calls for it
• Characters looking more battle-worn, determined, and physically imposing during major conflicts
• Dynamic, hand-drawn-looking fight scenes
• Strong use of shadows, contrast, and dramatic lighting
• A visual sense of weight and intensity during battles
• The iconic artistic feeling of the classic Dragon Ball Z era
In particular, we would love to see the main and supporting characters portrayed with more serious and mature expressions and designs when appropriate. Characters such as Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, Trunks, and others can still retain their personalities while having a stronger, more imposing, and dramatic presence during serious story arcs and battles.
The goal is not to make Dragon Ball permanently dark or remove its humor and personality. Rather, we would like future Dragon Ball Super projects to have the ability to shift into a more serious, somber, and powerful visual tone when the story demands it.
The attached example shows the type of visual direction and artistic style we are referring to. An Instagram link is also included as a visual reference for the style, character designs, shading, and overall atmosphere we would love to see explored in future Dragon Ball Super projects.

Dragon Ball has evolved over the years, but the classic visual identity remains extremely important to many fans around the world. The detailed artwork, strong character proportions, expressive faces, dramatic shading, and intense atmosphere of the classic Dragon Ball Z era created an artistic identity that many fans still deeply appreciate.
Our request is simple:
Please consider bringing the spirit of the classic Dragon Ball Z art style, character design, and serious visual atmosphere back into future Dragon Ball Super projects.
We appreciate Toei Animation for continuing to bring Dragon Ball to life, and we hope you will listen to the fans who would love to see this artistic direction explored in future projects.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to the fans.
