Bring New Year’s Eve fireworks to Caroline Springs Lake every year

The issue

On 31 December, numerous families gathered around Caroline Springs Lake on New Year’s Eve.

Children waited. Families stayed.

Many genuinely believed there would be fireworks.

Sadly, no fireworks display was scheduled, and families eventually left disappointed.

This moment made something very clear: our community expects,  and wants, a local New Year’s Eve celebration.

What we are requesting Council to do

  • We respectfully ask Melton City Council to commit to an annual, family-friendly New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Caroline Springs Lake, held every 31 December at approximately 9:30 pm.

Why this is reasonable

  • Community demand is already visible. Families turned up on New Year’s Eve expecting fireworks. The interest exists it is simply unmet.
  • Population growth has shifted west.
The outer west is where Melbourne’s growth is happening, yet major civic celebrations have not kept pace.
  • Other inner city western suburbs (eg footscray) already host fireworks.
Council-run New Year’s Eve fireworks already exist in parts of the west. The outer west should not be left behind.
  • A local event improves safety and access.
A council-organised celebration keeps families local, reduces congestion elsewhere, and discourages unsafe backyard fireworks.
  • The location is suitable and proven.
Caroline Springs Lake has previously hosted council events, including fireworks, demonstrating it is an appropriate venue.
  • Ratepayers deserve equitable access.
Residents in Melton contribute rates and taxes like any other council area. Major community celebrations should not stop closer to the city.

Our proposal

  • Annual New Year’s Eve fireworks
  • 1 x Family-friendly time (around 9:30 pm) and 1 x at midnight
  • Caroline Springs Lake as the venue
  • Professional safety, crowd management, and clean-up
  • Clear communication for residents, including pet owners

Message to Councillors

Families were already there on New Year’s Eve …waiting. The absence of fireworks was not due to a lack of interest, but a lack of provision.

This petition asks for one well-managed, annual event that reflects the reality of population growth and gives outer-west families the same opportunity to celebrate locally as other communities.

Call to action

If you live in Caroline Springs, Melton, or the surrounding western suburbs, please add your name and share this petition.

Let’s welcome the New Year together… right here at home.
