On January 21st of this year, our lives were torn apart when my husband was taken by ICE right outside our home. It was early in the morning, just before our girls were going to be dropped off for school. In those desperate moments, he pleaded with the agents not to take him. He told them that he never had a father growing up, and all he wanted was the chance to be the kind of dad he never had—to be present, to guide, and to love his children every single day. But his pleas were ignored, and from that day forward our family has been living a nightmare. My husband is a loving father, a devoted husband, and a good man with no criminal history. He has always been a hard worker, committed to providing for his family. Years ago, we started our own small painting business together. Through long days, hard work, and sacrifice, we were able to provide for our children and eventually buy our home. We have never lived off the government or asked for any assistance—we built everything we have with our own hands. Beyond that, my husband is a kind and generous soul who has never hesitated to help others—whether it was offering food or support to a homeless neighbor or lending a hand to other Hispanics in our community. He has always been more than just a husband and father to us—he has been a role model of compassion, resilience, and selflessness. The impact of his absence has been devastating. A few months after he was taken, ICE agents returned to our home after receiving a supposed tip. This second raid only deepened our fear and trauma. Our children, who should be focused on school and simply being kids, now live with anxiety and constant fear. Our oldest daughter suffers from panic attacks and insomnia. Our middle child is terrified that I might be taken away next, leaving them without either parent. And our youngest, who just turned one, has never had the chance to truly know or experience the love of her father. Financially, we are struggling more than ever. My husband was our family’s sole provider, and although I work, it has been incredibly difficult to meet the needs of our children and cover all of our expenses alone. Our business has suffered without him, and we have been on the verge of losing the home we worked so hard for. No financial burden, however, compares to the emotional suffering we endure every single day. This year has been the hardest and most painful year of our lives. We are not asking for sympathy—we are asking for justice and compassion. My husband is not a criminal. He is a father, a husband, a business owner, and a contributing member of society who deserves to be with his family. Our children deserve their dad. I deserve my partner in life.
