Bring Cricket Back to Queenstown Oval 🏏

Bring Cricket Back to Queenstown Oval 🏏
The issue
To: Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC)
📣 Campaign Update (October 2025):
Following recent media coverage, QLDC has confirmed they have been actively putting Queenstown forward to NZ Cricket for hosting opportunities and that ongoing dialogue exists between both parties.
This petition’s purpose remains the same — to show strong community and nationwide support to bring international cricket back to Queenstown, and to better understand where we currently stand, what’s required to meet NZC’s criteria, and how we can work together on practical solutions to make it happen.
Together, we can help ensure John Davies Oval once again hosts the international cricket it deserves. 🏏
✍️ Summary:
We call on Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to bring cricket back to the John Davies Oval at the Queenstown Events Centre.
There are concerns that QLDC has not been actively putting Queenstown forward as a host venue. As a result, Queenstown has been left off the current Summer of Cricket schedule — despite being home to one of the world’s most iconic cricket grounds.
📣 Why This Matters:
The Queenstown Oval is one of the most spectacular cricket grounds in the world, set at the foot of the Remarkables and near Lake Wakatipu. It has successfully hosted international ODIs and T20s in the past, and remains a venue that showcases New Zealand cricket at its very best.
Yet in the latest Summer of Cricket, Queenstown is missing. This is a huge disappointment for locals, visitors, and cricket lovers worldwide.
🏏 Our Community & Global Support:
• Locals want a place to gather, play, and celebrate cricket in our own backyard.
• Young players deserve the inspiration of seeing professional games at home, fueling the next generation of talent.
• International cricket lovers — including groups like the Barmy Army — would travel here, bringing tourism and economic benefits to our district.
• New Zealand’s reputation as a cricketing nation grows when we showcase matches at globally admired venues like Queenstown Oval.
🙋♀️ My Story:
As a proud parent of a young cricketer, I know how much it means for kids to play on the Oval and dream of one day seeing their heroes there. Cricket at the Queenstown Oval is more than just a game — it’s a community experience, a tourism driver, and a point of pride for our region.
✅ What We’re Asking - We urge:
QLDC → to actively put Queenstown Oval forward as a host venue.
NZC → to recognise that community demand and schedule international and domestic matches in Queenstown once again.
