Bring Clean, Piped Water to Beecher Town, Jamaica- A Basic Human Right.
The Issue
No Community Should Wait Decades for Water
Beecher Town, Jamaica, does not have reliable access to clean, piped water.
For decades, families in this St. Ann community have depended on rainwater and the uncertain arrival of water trucks to meet basic daily needs.
This is not merely an inconvenience.
It is a matter of dignity, health, and a basic human right.
Beecher Town, nestled in the parish of St. Ann, just three and a half miles from Ocho Rios, is a place many proudly call home. Though many residents now live abroad, the ties to home remain strong. Yet despite this connection and decades of resilience, one painful reality remains unchanged:
Beecher Town still has no reliable running water.
Daily life is shaped by the absence of something many take for granted.
Water must be collected, stored, and carefully rationed. When tanks run dry, families are left with uncertainty. Children, working adults, and the elderly continue to live with this reality year after year.
For generations, the people of Beecher Town have endured these conditions with strength and determination. But resilience should never be mistaken for acceptance.
Hope appeared within reach when a feasibility study identified viable water sources and possible solutions. Yet despite this progress, the promise of piped water remains unrealized.
Formal submissions have been made to the National Water Commission (NWC), the Government of Jamaica, and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation. Still, the community continues to wait for what should already exist:
A clear plan.
A public timeline.
And accountability.
Meanwhile, development continues in surrounding communities, including new housing projects, while Beecher Town remains without basic water infrastructure.
Access to water should not depend on where a person lives.
The people of Beecher Town deserve better.
They deserve the dignity, security, and peace of mind that come with reliable access to clean, continuous, piped water — just like any other community.
We are calling on the National Water Commission and the Government of Jamaica to:
• Implement the identified water solutions
• Provide a clear and public timeline
• Allocate the necessary resources
• Ensure accountability and delivery
Clean water is not a privilege — it is a basic human right.
No community should have to wait decades for something so fundamental.
