Bring Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere to Life — as an Anime Universe!

The Issue

Dear Brandon Sanderson and Dragonsteel Entertainment,

As fans of the Cosmere, we’re continually blown away by the depth, emotion, and brilliance of your stories. With intricate magic systems, unique planetary settings, and emotionally resonant character arcs, the Cosmere feels like it was built for animation.

While recent live-action adaptation plans have sadly fallen through, this opens the door to a new (and arguably better) opportunity: a multi-studio anime adaptation of the Cosmere.

Think of the success of Critical Role’s animated series by Titmouse or the diverse storytelling format of Star Wars: Visions, with multiple animation studios handling different worlds, tones, and arcs. Stormlight Archive could shine in the high-octane style of Dragon Ball or Attack on Titan, while Tress of the Emerald Sea begs for a more whimsical approach, like Studio Ghibli.

Sanderson’s writing style already reads like a screenplay, and many of the Cosmere’s stunning magic systems (like Lashings, Forgery, or Hemalurgy) are not just visual but visually demanding. These elements are difficult and expensive to do justice in live-action, but animation could make them spectacular and accessible.

Anime would also:

  • Allow different tones/styles per world (Mistborn vs. Warbreaker, etc.)
  • Support hidden Easter eggs for worldhoppers across visual styles
  • Enable shorter production timelines by working with multiple studios at once

We believe that your massive global fanbase (and record-breaking Kickstarters!) would enthusiastically support such a project. This is a format worthy of the Cosmere and one that can adapt all the books faithfully and imaginatively.

We’re signing this to show our interest and encourage you to consider a partnership with studios like Wit, MAPPA, Studio Trigger, Science Saru, and more. The anime world is ready, and so are we.

Please consider it. And to fans reading this: sign, share, and comment your dream adaptations! What book do you want to see first? What studio? What style? Let’s show Brandon how much potential this has.
