Bring Back the Thin Blue Line Badge: Honour Our Fallen Heroes

The Issue

Who is affected?

The Thin Blue Line badge is a symbol of respect for police officers who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. By banning this badge, the Met Police, under the leadership of Mark Rowley is disregarding the wishes of officers who wear it to honour their fallen colleagues, as well as the deep emotional connection that many officers, their families, and the wider emergency services community have to this symbol of sacrifice. Anonymous pressure groups have pushed for this ban, but their reasons have not been made public, and the emergency services community has been denied the opportunity to make their own representations.

What is at stake?

If this ban remains, it sends a clear message that the sacrifices of our fallen officers are being forgotten. In a time when assaults on police officers are increasing, this decision is not only an affront to officers but also risks demoralising those who continue to put themselves in harm’s way every day. The badge is a powerful and simple way to honour those who have given their lives protecting the public. To add insult to injury, this ban was announced on the same day a memorial was unveiled for Sgt Matt Ratana, who was tragically shot and killed by a detainee in 2020. We cannot let this tribute to the fallen be erased.

Why is now the time to act?

Now, more than ever, we must stand with our police officers and ensure their sacrifices are honoured. The Thin Blue Line badge is not and NEVER has been political – it is a symbol of remembrance. This petition addresses the fact that the emergency services community has not been allowed to have its voice heard in this decision. By signing, we can demand that the Met Police reverse this ban and allow officers to continue wearing the badge with pride, in memory of their fallen colleagues. It’s time to act and ensure respect for those who have died in service is restored.
