The Issue

I am a passionate supporter of the Washington Commanders/Redskins football team and of Native American culture. I write to you today, urging the Washington ownership collective to resurrect the 1965 spear logos and jerseys as their primary look.

“The name "Commanders" fails to capture the essence, tradition, and historical weight associated with the Redskins. It lacks the uniqueness, emotional connection, and pride that our team's original name embodies. The change to "Commanders" dilutes our team's identity and weakens the connection with its devoted fanbase.” - Daniel Fazzolare

Earlier in the year, the Native American Guardians Association petition to revert the franchises name back to “Redskins” gained hundreds of thousands of supporters, just to be shot down immediately by team president Jason Wright.
The rebranding campaign as of now has been lacklustre, tasteless and disheartening. I acknowledge the cultural sensitivity to the name “Redskins,” but why does the collective identity of the team have to change with it?

I confidently believe that Washington fans world wide would be ecstatic about the resurrection of this logo. Every single aspect of the franchise would be improved through this change:

  • Merchandise & memorabilia
  • Stadium aesthetic & design
  • Professional Appearance (current “W” logo is amateur)

Give the fans the team identity they were once proud of. A change of the name should not result in the change of a physical identity.

This logo is not offensive and can be tied to fan favourite names such as Hogs and Redwolves etc. The colour pallet is more unique and represents the franchises history better than the current red, yellow and alternative black.

In the edit shown, there are many changes from the original 1965 uniforms to give a more timeless and fresh look:

Chrome Face-mask -  the 1965 spear helmet had a dull grey face-mask. I have prompted the idea of making the face-mask chrome to make the helmet more unique and eye catching - no NFL team in the league have a chrome face-mask.

2000s stripes - the Redskins helmet is notorious for having the burgundy and white stripes on the crown of the helmet - they fitted nicely with the arrows on the side; I've also adjusted the gold/yellow colour to be more like the 1965 spear logo.

Sleeves - the sleeves are from the 2002 70 year anniversary uniforms. This is the last time Washington sported the spear logo; this uniform has been a fan favourite for years and has been showcased in the game Madden.

Number font - the number font is the 2000s number which was iconic on the uniforms.

Colours - the burgundy is significantly darker than recent uniforms; which is reflective of the 1965 uniforms and logo. The gold is less yellow and represents the gold from the spear logo also - the sleeves and stroke around the number are still the more mustard coloured gold.
