Bring back the prefabs to meet housing target and provide cheap social and private housing
The Issue
80 years ago, Britain faced a housing crisis. People were left homeless from war and substandard Victorian slums which were being cleared and tenants rehouse before the war.
Today we face a housing crisis, high prices for first time buyers, high private rents, subletting rooms and high council house waiting lists, some of them up to 10 years long! Young people and people with special needs are most affected by the housing crisis.
As a society, we are at risk of losing everything our greatest generation ancestors and grandparents have achieved, regressing the greed driven era commodified private ownership causing prices to explode beyond the reach of most people, sky high rents from for profit passive income “earners” and massive foreign equity companies. The number of under 40 year old living with their parents is increasing, this reduces their confidence, and negatively impacts productivity as we have see with “quiet quitting”
the government is moving in the right direction in terms of setting the target of building 1.5 million new homes but this target won’t be achieved. They is a shortage of workers, bringing the in immigrant workers is a controversial topic and also, immigrants are being blamed for the low council housing stock (it’s right to buy and lack of replenishment) and they is a shortage of building materials to build the houses. A prefabricated home will cost between £7000-£70000 depending on the model. Unlike brick and mortar, prefabs are manufactured in factories and erected and assembled on site. It takes only a few hours to assemble a prefab, saving labour and time. Meaning that a whole estate can be erected within a few short days, and with a community in a week. Private prefab estates, we saw these in the US in the form of “precut” homes that you could order to deliver, today you can order a small prefab on Amazon but the land you would need is not available.
The intention of this petition is for us, the people to lobby the government to do the following.
- Meet the 1.5 million target by building prefabricated, factory produced houses
- build council or co-op owned estates of prefabricated homes for social rent.
- build estates or empty lot estates for first time buyers.
