The issue

Around the world fans of Umbrella Academy had waited patiently for their final season, and thought they had received it on the 8th of August, 2024. However, whilst the season was released, there was fandom-wide uproar that it didn't feel complete, that many things felt out of place. Quickly, thanks to post-release interviews, we learned that a LOT had been cut from the originally planned ten episode script, squashed down into six episodes.

Television needs the space to breathe. Writers need to be able to express themselves and put their heart and soul onto the screen, brought to life by the actors and crew that work on every television show. To hear that filming had been done for these episodes, just for it to get dropped by editors not because they wanted to, but because NETFLIX refused to pay for the full season's production, is heartbreaking.

Though a secondary release on the streaming service may not be simple, there is a simple method to fix this egregious error. Netflix should release a boxset edition of the entire show as originally released, but with an added volume of how the original final season should have been. Include the four missing episodes, give the fandom it's well deserved COMPLETE final season, like the directors cut version of a film as opposed to the initial release.

If Netflix are unable to do this in full, then there are still alternatives. Releasing the original script would be well received so the fans can see what could have been, as well as releasing all the deleted scenes rather than just the five that were offered to us this far would be a great step.

The sooner this error is rectified by Netflix, the better it would be for their show's reputation. The Umbrella Academy has been loved since its inception as a television show not just because it began as an epic comic series, but because of its zany nature and unique take to the superhero genre. But the longer they take to give up the full season, the more the reputation of the show will be tarnished by unhappy viewers, meaning its fanbase will falter. Faith is being lost in Netflix for the poor treatment of its shows, so by showing this beloved series the attention it deserves and setting the benchmark for better production and releases with its upcoming projects, a lot of people will come back to seeing Netflix as a positive streaming company with its viewership in mind.
