The Issue

The Azalea Belles of Wilmington, North Carolina have been a cherished tradition for generations. These young women, adorned in antebellum-style hoop skirts, play a significant role in the city’s annual North Carolina Azalea Festival by celebrating our heritage and welcoming guests. Their presence is a vivid reminder of our community's rich history and vibrant culture. Unfortunately, the Cape Fear Garden Club decided to discontinue this beloved tradition, and we are urging them to reconsider.

Wilmington’s Azalea Festival is more than just an event; it is a celebration of our city’s natural beauty and historical legacy. The Azalea Belles embody southern grace and hospitality, serving as goodwill ambassadors to locals and tourists alike. Their involvement is instrumental in maintaining the festival's charm and elegance, which draws visitors from across the nation and contributes significantly to Wilmington's economy.

The decision to eliminate this iconic feature of the festival programming affects not just the festival but the community at large. Young women and their families look forward to participating in this tradition, which fosters community engagement, volunteerism, and pride in our local customs.

We propose retaining the Azalea Belles with enhancements that reflect our community’s commitment to inclusivity and modern values. This would involve a more diverse representation among the Belles and ensuring that their role reflects the true spirit of welcoming and openness that Wilmington stands for in today’s society.

The restoration of the Azalea Belles would replenish our community with excitement and continuity, honoring our past while embracing a more inclusive future. Join us in asking the Cape Fear Garden Club to reinstate this time-honored tradition. Preserve our heritage and ensure that future generations experience the joy and pride that comes with being an Azalea Belle.

Please sign this petition to urge the Cape Fear Garden Club to bring back the Wilmington Azalea Belles. Let us preserve our heritage and continue to celebrate our community's unique blend of history and tradition.
