The Issue

In recent years, Plymouth’s vibrant skating community has been left without a permanent place to call home. As a passionate skater, I've seen firsthand the challenges we've faced as we try to find suitable venues for our beloved activity. The closure of our indoor roller rink left a significant gap in our community, where people of all ages once came together to exercise, improve their skills, and forge lifelong friendships.

Plymouth, a city known for its energy and community spirit, deserves a dedicated indoor roller rink. A facility like this would enhance our local culture, providing a safe and inclusive environment for skaters of all ages and abilities. It's not just about skating; it's about community, health, and an outlet for creativity and expression.

Skating isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifestyle for many of us. It offers fantastic physical and mental health benefits and is an excellent way to keep active while having fun. According to multiple studies, regular skating can burn up to 650 calories per hour and significantly improves balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health. Moreover, a permanent roller rink would give many of our young aspiring skaters a chance to develop their skills in a dedicated setting.

Consider the economic and social benefits. Numerous cities with dedicated roller rinks have witnessed increases in local tourism, job opportunities, and overall community wellbeing. A rink could host national skating events, drawing visitors from across the UK and boosting local businesses. This could catalyze a downtown revitalization, introducing a vibrant social hub where families, friends, and tourists gather.

We propose that the city council reassess available venues, or potentially develop a new facility, prioritizing our community’s needs. Drawing from the successful models of other cities, public-private partnerships could be explored to ensure the rink is run sustainably. Funding could be pursued from community grants, local sponsors, and fundraising events spearheaded by skating enthusiasts.

The time to act is now. By signing this petition, you'll be contributing to a cause that truly matters to our community and ensuring the future of skating in Plymouth. Let’s restore what we've lost and give our skating community the permanent home it deserves. Please join me and sign this petition today to bring back Plymouth’s indoor roller rink!
