The Issue

Yesterday, tragedy struck at Warner Robins High School. It was a day that changed the lives of many families, including my own. Two of my dear friends were shot, and while the others were unharmed, the fear and anxiety that gripped me and the entire community was overwhelming. In those harrowing moments, I couldn't help but think: what if I had been at that school? How would my own parents know if I was safe?

At times like this, it becomes painfully obvious why it's crucial to allow students to have their phones with them during school hours. It's not just a matter of convenience; it's a matter of safety. In emergency situations, such as a school shooting or lockdown, students need the ability to contact their parents immediately. Parents deserve the peace of mind of knowing that their children are safe and accounted for.

Currently, Warner Robins High School does not permit students to carry their phones during school hours. This policy must change. Allowing students to have their phones can be instrumental in ensuring quick communication during emergencies. Mobile devices are tools that can provide instant access to emergency services, confirm the whereabouts and safety of students, and provide tangible evidence of ongoing situations.

Moreover, modern smartphones can be used silently—texting the local police or sending out alerts without drawing undue attention. This silent communication can save lives, providing students with a discreet way to signal for help or update their families about their safety.

It's essential for the school administration and local authorities to understand that the world our children are growing up in is increasingly unpredictable. Schools should be safe havens for learning, not places where children and parents are left in the dark during emergencies.

I urge the authorities to reconsider this policy and allow students to keep their phones during school hours. By doing so, we can ensure a faster, safer, and more secure response during critical incidents. It is time to prioritize the safety and peace of mind of both students and their families.

Please sign this petition to bring back phones in Warner Robins High School so that every student can have the means to stay safe and connected with their families.
