Bring Back Peace and Security to the International System

The Issue

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

After a brief reprieve in global conflict after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the world enjoyed a moment of unprecedented peace and prosperity.  During that time, the leadership of the United States of America was a guiding light of democracy, economic power, and sound leadership.  The United States was a "shining city on a hill". We all wanted the "American dream".

These days, the American dream only happens when you're asleep. It seems that the world is trapped in an American nightmare.  We no longer have the leadership of great and visionary presidents like James Madison, Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan.

Recent aggression on behalf of the United States has had a devastating impact on the economy and international peace and stability.

We the people of the United Nations can no longer stand idly by as our good works are destroyed.

Recent words and actions of the United States go beyond the vague possibility of a spoiler or rogue state.  We are witnessing threats and acts of aggression. These violations of international law are destabilizing our economies and our security.

Repeated threats of annexation against Canada, Greenland, and Panama are a direct attack on security, international law and stability in the international system for everyone.  Unilateral tariffs and breaches of duly negotiated and ratified economic treaties are a direct attack on economies, international law, and innocent people.

This cannot go on.

We need to unite as an international community to restore peace and stability to the world order.  Instead of attacking each other with threats, tariffs, and military actions or proposing expensive alternative global governance structures, we need to take it to the UN.

The UN Security Council might be limited by the presence of the United States as a Permanent Member, but there is a way around that.

We must ask our leaders to table a resolution in the General Assembly.

In 1950, the Uniting for Peace Resolution, (General Assembly Resolution 377) was adopted, thus giving the General Assembly the power to convene an emergency special session if the Security Council fails to act to maintain international peace.  There, every country big and small has an equal voice to discuss and authorize action to bring back peace and security to the international system.

The time to act is now.

Together, with hope and hard work, we can stop this madness and bring back peace and stability to the world. Together we can protect our shared prosperity.
