I am proposing we bring back the joy and life to our streets by switching to orange-coloured LEDs, and here is why this matters more than just aesthetics.

The new LED streetlights, typically emitting a high level of blue light, are doing more than just changing our view. This blue-rich light is known to disrupt our natural sleep cycles by suppressing melatonin production, leading to poor sleep and potential long-term health risks . Unlike the old warm glow, these harsh lights create glare, cause visual discomfort, and can even trigger migraines or other issues for sensitive individuals . The very lights meant to keep us safe are making our environment less comfortable and potentially harming our wellbeing.

But there is hope. We don't have to choose between efficiency and the character of our nation. Advances in LED technology mean we can now create efficient, warm-orange light that is gentle on the eyes and friendly to our biological clocks . Forward-thinking councils like Dorset are already leading the way, adopting "warmer" LED lighting at 2700K to protect residents' health and the beauty of their night skies .
