Bring back night safety marshals in Sussex
The Issue
In the heart of Sussex, our dedicated team of Night Safety Marshals has been an unwavering beacon of safety and support for those navigating the bustling night-time economy. As the former team leader, I have been privileged to work alongside compassionate, skilled individuals tirelessly striving to ensure that night-time revellers are safe and secure throughout their evening.
Over the years, our team has made a substantial impact in the community. We've assisted countless vulnerable individuals, successfully de-escalated potentially violent situations, and provided critical support to the Sussex police by allowing them to focus on more serious incidents. During these moments of crisis, having trained marshals present is not just beneficial—it's essential.
One striking example of the work we do is tending to individuals who are injured or in distress while they await medical assistance. By offering warmth, reassurance, and a comforting presence, we have consistently been able to make a difference during emergencies and prevent situations from escalating.
However, the recent decision to disband the Night Safety Marshals program threatens to undo all the progress we have made. This decision will not only jeopardise public safety, but it is also likely to lead to increased costs for the local government and the Home Office, as additional police resources will be needed to cover the gaps created by the absence of our marshals.
The relationships and trust we have built with the community and law enforcement are invaluable, and the absence of the marshals could unravel years of hard-won progress. Without trained personnel to act as the first line of response, the likelihood of incidents getting out of hand will skyrocket, making our streets less safe for everyone.
We cannot let Sussex revert to a state where the safety of its citizens during nighttime is compromised. I urge you to recognise the significance of the Night Safety Marshals and the crucial role they play in maintaining our community's wellbeing.
Please sign this petition to urge local authorities to reinstate the Night Safety Marshals program in Sussex. Together, we can ensure that our nights in town remain safe and enjoyable for all.
