A tenant pledge to Sunrex Management Ltd.
In the past, the service was removed due to contamination and improper use. Today, we commit to doing better.
1. WHY WE’RE SIGNING
- Recycling in our 64-suite building was cancelled years ago because the bins were misused.
- Sunrex has expressed considering reinstalling the service on a trial basis.
- If misuse happens again, the bins will be removed permanently.
- Proper recycling keeps hundreds of kilos of paper, plastic, glass and metal out of Brady Road Landfill every month and cuts the methane that drives climate-fuelled wildfires across Manitoba.
2. WHAT WE’RE ASKING SUNREX
- Provide clearly labeled, easily accessed mixed-recycling carts (and, when feasible, organics collection).
- Post the official “What Goes Where” guide by every chute and in the lobby/elevators.
- Review results with tenant reps after 90 days instead of cancelling the program at the first hiccup.
3. OUR TENANT PLEDGE
By signing this petition, I pledge to:
✅ Sort my own waste according to posted guidelines (no garbage or liquids in the blue cart).
✅ Rinse food containers and flatten cardboard.
✅ Remind neighbours politely or report issues constructively.
✅ Encourage others so our building becomes a zero-waste leader.
✅ I understand that misuse could cost the entire building this essential service.
The petition will close on July 15, ten days from launch, and results will be delivered to management the same week.
The absence of a recycling program in our apartment building in Downtown Winnipeg not only affects our community’s commitment to sustainability but also undermines the progress our city, and indeed the world, is striving for, in terms of environmental responsibility.
To put this into perspective, Canadians generate approximately 31 million tonnes of waste a year and only recycle about 30% of that waste. In Winnipeg alone, a significant portion of recyclable materials ends up in landfills due to inadequate recycling initiatives. This is a missed opportunity to embrace positive environmental impacts through proper waste management.
It's crucial to re-establish this recycling program not only to align with our environmental values but also to set a precedent for responsible living in urban settings. Let's advocate for a greener Winnipeg by urging our building management to reinstate the recycling program. Your signature can make a significant difference. Join us in this effort to bring back recycling to our community. Sign this petition and be a part of the change we wish to see.
Let’s prove we can recycle right - and keep it for good!
