My Petition sits at 211 Signatures today! And this is really powerful accomplishment! Let's look back why I started this petitikon, who signed, how YOU have made changes and a GLOBAL UPDATE on cities around the world!
I started this petition back in January of 2023! Let me just say, "WHY I STARTED" and, "How MY PETITION works"! In the early 2010s, A LARGE MASS PRODUCTION of LED STREETLIGHTS were being made from large UTILITY companies. Dalkia, Bright White LEDS and other companies that have made these lights. In my city, Dalkia had made a contract to install WHITE LEDS from 3000k to 4000k+ on every single street of the city's map. This WHITE LIGHT POLICY was made mostly due to COST EFFICIENCY, CRIME REDUCTION and ENVIRONMENTAL safety. But here's where this EXPLANATION failed. Light pollution rose about 300% AND in THE EARLY HALF of 2025 (after MAJOR changes on the ART TRANSIT PROJECT) rose another 40% RISING THE TOTAL to 340% of light pollution. The streetlight conversion WAS introduced IN EARLY 2017, but was COMPLETED in 2019. During this CONVERSION, streetlights started failing due to a manufacturing defect and being replaced with THE SAME LIGHT TYPE. 3000K or 4000K LED FIXTURES.
But because this LED STREETLIGHTING nightmare started causing ME MY OWN stress and high anxieties and MY FRIEND had this trance-like VIOLENT state, I decided to start this petition AFTER CONTACTING the city officials! HOWEVER, the failure of city officials started causing my own failure to keep moving. SO I DECIDED to create a TEAM AND MOVEMENT based on PROVIDING RESOURCES, INSTRUCTIONS and OUTSIDE USA HELP. This started CREATING pressure on many cities including CHICAGO ILL, DETROIT MI, ABQ NM, SANTE FE NM, etc.
As I provided TOOLS AND RESOURCES in exchange for signatures, people started taking action and than...DHAR MANN (OUR FAVORITE TV SHOW PRODUCER who makes INSPIRATIONAL videos) and MARK BAKER, (A CEO AND FOUNDER OF THE SOFT LIGHTS FOUNDATION) have signed. This has THAN PUT PRESSURE ON OTHER LARGER CITIES such as Los Angelas CA, Pheonix AZ, Tuscan AZ, and EVEN TONS OF SMALLER CITIES. A LARGE MASS OF SMALLER cities AND SOME major cities started moving TOWARDS 2200k and 2500k LED STREETLIGHTS with retrofitting styles and making this a standard! IN THE SUMMER OF 2023, NM ITSELF had created their OWN DARK SKY ASSOCIATION following my petitions SUCCESSION.
On Youtube, many grassroot collectors and city employees started collecting large collections of HPS STREETLIGHT heads, educating on HOW IMPORTANT THE darker color of lighting is TO how amazing these lights HAVE IMPACT on emotional resonance too. At this point, my petition started turning into a movement. Being the one who brought Flagstaff's Dark Sky AMBER LIGHTING LEGACY back to life, I started posting updates, did my part in contacting city officials and even played THAT ROLE in carrying the torch.
So, HOW FAR did this petition go and DID it go outside Albuquerque, New Mexico? YES! And the reason? WELL, as it turns out, A LOT OF CITIES started using WHITE LED STREETLIGHTS to convert. This MASSIVE MOVE on white led infrastructure WAS APART OF A BROADER efficient model for better INNOVATIVE FUTURE lighting. However, this started receiving NEGATIVE CRITIQUE and BACKLASH amongst residents, science and other voices. As this pressured built on, AMBER LED STREETLIGHTING technology was introduced! USING THE SAME and EVEN RETROFIT/NOSTALGIC formulas, these NEW FORMS OF LED STREETLIGHTING started making IT INTO some of our cities and their grids!
And THE BEST PART? science ACTUALLY BACKS up that BLUE RICH AND WARM WHITE LED STREETLIGHTING is known to CAUSE MAJOR ISSUES on human health, wildlife, environmental factors, and EVEN MENTAL DECLINE. These lights often CREATED A DEPRESSIVE atmosphere and is starting to hit a breaking point. Amber LED STREETLIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES bypass A LOT OF WHAT WHITE LED LIGHTING couldn't.
Using LUMINS BASED LIGHTING and the SPECTURAL COLORS of LED technologies, AMBER was often CITED to fit this BETTER THAN a simple BLUE/WARM RICH WHITE LED HEAD. Giving way to THE INFAMOUS PHOSPHER and NARROW BAND AMBER LEDS that have been hitting some grids. THESE light are also KNOWN TO EVEN TAKE ON THE old HPS lightbulb TYPES. Making this technology RUN on a whole new level!
the MAIN STRUGGLE is how expensive these led technologies can be. BUT ALTERNATIVE MANUFACTURING and EVEN ALTERNATIVE EFFICIENT methods has opened the DOOR FOR MORE possibilities and allowing these streetlights TO BRING back that BEAUTIFUL ORANGE GOLDEN glow we all miss! The SOFT and CUTTLING light isn't leaving anytime soon! And THAT'S what makes this petition's GOAL so powerful!

AND this brings me to MY LAST portion of this message. BEING ABLE TO fight for our RIGHTS to better night time skies and having a cultural impact feels like A BIG victory in many ways! WE HAVEN'T gotten to our victory yet!

And remember, THIS MOVEMENT is about being heard! IF you FEEL like you're obligated to REACH OUT TO THE RESOURCES I provide, DON'T! Signing here is enough. I do recommend those who DO WANT TO REACH OUT USING WHAT I PROVIDED, to do so! AS in my last update, THE CITY OF ABQ still has not gotten back to me. AND it's PART OF how I manage and make this movement possible. As, NOT everyone WHO WORKS for the city/cities WILL always want to respond to ONE voice. BUT when that one voice has many others? THEN that starts to CREATE PRESSURE, CHANGE AND EVENTUALLY, a SHIFT towards something new! Change is always ABOUT growth BUT ALSO about larger collective that pressure city officials to make other decisions IN ONES WE THE PEOPLE WANT! Not what leaders want! THAT'S how our NATIONS WERE shaped and that's HOW WE LEARNED about history in school!
