ASL Petition Update: We’re Making Progress!
We’re excited to share some updates on our continued efforts to bring American Sign Language (ASL) to our district as a World Language.
We continue to collaborate with the district to identify a starting point for offering ASL and to analyze the most efficient path forward. We’re encouraged by the ongoing conversations and remain committed to moving this initiative forward.
Our Sign Squad Is on the Move!
We’re excited to begin a pilot ASL Club at the middle school!. We’re also growing awareness at the elementary level, where our Elementary Squad Leaders will host an ASL Awareness Table during recess twice a month. Students will have opportunities to learn more about ASL, explore sign language, and help spread awareness throughout our school community. Dates will be announced on “Live at the Lane” news, so students can stay tuned.
Our Next Step: Understanding Family Interest in ASL
As we continue advocating for ASL as a World Language option, it’s important to begin thinking about whether your child would choose ASL if it were available at school. If a districtwide survey is shared in the future, we want families to be ready to provide thoughtful, accurate feedback about their interest and their students’ language choices. Understanding how many students would genuinely consider choosing ASL can help us better communicate the level of interest among families and strengthen our advocacy efforts.
Together, we can make ASL a meaningful part of our students’ world! ASL is a valuable skill that can benefit all students by building communication skills, empathy, and inclusion. For students who thrive with visual learning, have learning differences, or find verbal communication challenging, ASL can provide another way to express themselves and connect with others. By offering ASL as a World Language, we can empower students with a lifelong skill while creating a more inclusive school community where every student has the opportunity to learn, communicate, and belong.
