Good evening, Yesterday, Sen. Creighton released a statement in response to the public outcry regarding the proposed changes to the use of the Jones State Forest. According to his letter, the bill was submitted at the request of Texas A&M to use "5-10% of the Jones State Forest (southern end near State Highway 242) for educational purposes". However, this is not reflected in the bill he submitted, which includes "private commercial use" and no limit to the % of the park that can be developed or by whom. Today, Sen. Creighton announced that he is reconsidering elements of the bill. He expressed his intention to hold public hearings, "remove the "commercial" language from the bill" and is "considering adding a more comprehensive conservation easement to protect the entire remaining 90% of the forest from EVER being used for anything other than its current use". While this is a step in the right direction, for many, this is not enough. Your voice matters! Please continue to contact Sen. Creighton and your representatives! The bill has moved to the Senate Committee on Higher Education. You can find contact information here: http://savejonesstateforest.weebly.com/stay-updated/so-what-should-i-be-doing-now Link to Sen.
