THANK YOU and Congratulations…

We’ve hit an incredible milestone – 3,000 signatures and counting on the Fight the Height petition! Thank you so much for your helping protect the Beach from high rises, skyscrapers and looming towers on Queen Street. Our petition regarding the proposed 18-storey skyscraper at 1631 Queen Street East has surpassed 3,000 signatures and we need to keep the momentum going!

You probably know that in 2012, the City and area residents worked together to create the Beach Urban Design Guidelines (UDGs). This was undertaken because of concerns that developers wanted to dramatically change the character of the neighbourhood by putting up highrises. The compromise that was struck allowed for growth to 6-storeys. Since then, more housing has been built, but on a human scale. Including the new 6-storey building directly across the street. That developer conformed to the rules, but now Councillor Bradford believes they shouldn’t be followed here.

The City owns the property at 1631 Queen Street. They are turning over this property and allowing 3x the height in exchange for only 30% of the units being affordable for only a few decades. We believe all 279 units should be deeply affordable, remain in the public realm, and that they should be built in a 6-storey format. We are for 100% affordable housing, not fake affordable housing!

If we don't stop this skyscraper there will be no turning back and we will be defenseless against the developers and their well-healed lawyers and political enablers. This will affect all of Queen St. from Coxwell to Neville Park!

Our banner in the Beach Metro News, Facebook ads and flyers all cost money. Please make a contribution to the campaign: https://gofund.me/b54db363 If you value the 6-storey height limit that helps make the Beach a special place, we need your help.
