The Issue

As a long-time animal rights campaigner, I am appalled by the reported actions of the Moroccan authorities in dealing with stray dogs. This kind of behavior does not belong in the 21st century and absolutely does not belong at global sporting events like the FIFA World Cup. Sporting hosts have a responsibility to demonstrate mutual tolerance and respect not only for people from different cultures but also for the humane treatment of animals.

Morocco stands to gain significant financial benefits from hosting the 2030 World Cup. However, this opportunity should not overshadow the blatant disregard for animal welfare that is occurring. It is deeply troubling to learn about the inhumane killing of innocent stray dogs, an act made all the worse considering these animals are only stray due to human negligence. Morocco assumes that the culling of stray dogs will “clean up” the country but on the contrary, it will paint Morocco and a cruel and inhumane country.

Stray dogs deserve compassion, care, and humane control measures, not a death sentence. By implementing responsible and ethical stray animal management programs, Morocco can set an example of integrity and kindness, forging a path to progress and modernity. These programs could include spay and neuter initiatives, vaccine programs, sheltering, and adoption campaigns that could truly help Morocco with their stray dog issue.

Join me in urging FIFA and global sporting bodies to hold Morocco accountable and demand an end to these cruel practices. Insist that measures be put in place to protect stray dogs and ensure that humane treatment is a non-negotiable condition for hosting the World Cup. If these conditions are not met, Morocco should not be allowed to host the World Cup.

The International Animal Welfare Protection Coalition (IAWPC), RSPCA, Dogs Trust, PETA and In Defense of Aninals have already called out Morocco’s so called “initiatives to deal with the stray dog issue”. Will you stand with them too?
