Boycott the FIFA World Cup 2026 and LA28 Olympics Over US Threats to Allied Nations
The Issue
We call on European Union and NATO member states to refuse official participation in major international sporting events hosted by the United States, including the FIFA World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
International sport is not politically neutral. It confers legitimacy, prestige, and soft power on host nations and is routinely used to project values, stability, and leadership on the global stage. When those values are undermined in practice, participation becomes an endorsement.
The United States is pursuing domestic and foreign policies that are fundamentally at odds with the principles EU and NATO countries publicly commit to uphold, including respect for international law and humanitarian norms; protection of civilian life and press freedom; democratic accountability and the rule of law; and the right to protest and freedom of expression.
At the same time, the US President has publicly threatened allied nations, asserted a right to acquire Greenland, and imposed punitive tariffs on democratic allies as a form of political leverage. Using economic retaliation and security threats to coerce allies constitutes a clear breach of international norms, alliance principles, and respect for sovereignty.
Allowing the United States to host global sporting events under these conditions would normalise coercion and undermine the values these events claim to represent.
We therefore call on EU and NATO member states to:
- Boycott official participation in US-hosted mega sporting events
- Act collectively, so no single country is isolated or punished
- Demand the withdrawal of threats and tariffs against allied nations
This is not about punishing athletes or fans. It is about refusing to lend legitimacy to intimidation, economic coercion, and threats against democratic allies.
Sport should unite—not be used as a tool of pressure or domination.
