Each year, Koreans observe Sambok/Bok-Nal, which means “three dog meat eating days”, wherein they slaughter and consume dogs with the belief that by doing so, it assists in fighting the heat during the hottest days of summer. The dates are based on the lunar calendar and this year they are noted as falling on July 13th, 23th, and August 1st. It is said that one million dogs are slaughtered during this period out of the estimated 2 million dogs consumed every year.
SaveKoreanDogs – “I am not for food”, the activist group in Seoul, South Korea, led by Nami Kim, along with global activists and volunteers, have joined as a team and are getting ready to campaign in an effort to increase awareness and lower the dog meat consumption this year. 300,000copies of flyers will be printed by June and will be distributed at two locations in Seoul – the Moran dog meat markets and the busiest street in Seoul. Volunteers are required to distribute the flyers at the two locations and to reach out to the people. The volunteer target for the campaign on the ground in South Korea is a minimum of 50 individuals. It is also requested that as many men as possible volunteer for the flyer distribution, as men are shown more respect and attention than women in South Korea. Meeting and speaking with the dog eaters directly is the most beneficial way to make the much needed impact.
For ongoing updates related to the campaign and the fight against the dog meat trade in South Korea, as well as photographic coverage of last year’s campaign, please visit the SaveKoreanDogs Facebook post (https://www.facebook.com/savekoreandogs/).
Donations will be used toward the following:
- The printing of 300,000 posters and flyers to distribute during the Bok-Nal at two locations in Seoul in order to increase awareness of international disapproval and lower the dog meat consumption rates;
- Dog rescues from meat markets prior to their slaughter;
- The veterinary care, food, and shelter while the dogs await relocation, and;
- The fees associated with travel documents, travel crates, and airfare for the rescued dogs for their departure to safety in the U.S.
Donations will NOT be used toward the following:
- Administrative fees;
- Other causes or initiatives, and/or;
- Travel or expenses for volunteers.
Where several other volunteer groups and organizations use a large portion of donations toward things outside of the noted cause, we use every cent strictly toward our efforts during the Bok-Nal and rescuing dogs from the meat markets.
