Petition updateAnderson SC Scouters. Continue to allow scouts to have their Fall/Spring campouts

Council rejects all proposals to continue campouts other than at Camp Old Indian

Here is an update, this would appear to be a council decision, not national’s. From the info I have, council organized family campouts, often referred to as our Cub/Parent weekends, are held at a site that is approved by the council. I think that is important to know. It was stated last Thursday that Sadlers Creek could be approved, but that would only allow other units to join Pack 41 for the day, no camping. That resolves nothing. When all of this began back in June, I thought we could resolve our issues. We knew that the zip lines were a problem and agreed to retire those at this time. We also agreed to the camping guidelines set forth by council. It was never mentioned at that time that Sadlers Creek was not an option. We soon realized that our campouts would have to be held at COI. There are no other approved sites. COI is not an option for us. Our people do not support moving our event to COI, as it would be nothing more than a Cub/Parent weekend. We are much more than that. We are family. There are many reasons for not moving our event to COI which we have already discussed. No need to travel that road again. With all things considered, we will be hosting the Sadlers Creek State Park first Fall Family Campout. This event will be opened to all youth groups in our area. This would include our Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, church youth groups (Awanas, etc), plus any other families that may wish to join us. Since this will no longer be a scout specific event, we will not use any BSA logos at this event. We will make certain that everyone understands that this is not a scouting event. In addition, we will not use the Roundtable or other similar district meetings to promote this event. It will be made clear that this is not a sanctioned scouting event. Special event liability insurance and all necessary paperwork will be in place as advised by our attorney. It is unfortunate that it has to be this way, but we look at this as an opportunity to take this event to another level. We have the support of the state park, but most important we have the support of our scout families. We have been doing this event for many years and we are not about to give it up. Let’s remember who decided to give this event up 14 years ago to go in a different direction. We understand that we will not always be in agreement on certain issues, but we hope that this decision to move in a different direction will not affect our scouting relationship.
