Horrific revelation after horrific revelation came out in the UK Covid Inquiry today as we heard evidence from officials at the heart of No. 10 during the pandemic - so many it was hard to keep up.

As we have always suspected, while cases were spreading across the UK and the world, the government wasted precious time in ideological debates over heard immunity, ignoring the situation on the ground and resigning themselves to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths in our communities.

While the Government’s approach should have been adapting to the growing number of cases in the UK, Johnson was asking ‘why are we destroying the economy for people who will die anyway soon’ calling the elderly and infirm ‘bed blockers’ and skipping COBRA meetings to go on a ‘half term’ break.

When we needed selfless and serious leadership the most, as thousands of our loved ones were dying alone, No. 10 descended into chaos. Johnson’s most senior advisors were calling him ‘mad and dangerous’, and yet in the second wave life and death mistakes were being repeated. Those at the heart of Government squabbled over power and public relations. We were doing everything we could to protect our loved ones in the most horrendous circumstances; they broke their own rules and partied when they should have been learning from their failures.

We won’t ever forget how they let our families down, and we will live with the devastation their failures have caused in the real world for the rest of our lives. Politicians will try to distract us from fundamental failures by stoking political scandal, but we won’t let the mistakes that led to the UK having one of the worst death tolls in the world slip under the radar. That is because lives in future pandemics depend on it. With your help, we will continue to spread awareness of what went wrong, and hold those who oversaw the disastrous handling of the pandemic to account long after the Inquiry is over.
