Yesterday the screw was turned on Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and the Cabinet Office, as they LOST their judicial review against the Covid Inquiry which tried to stop the inquiry accessing their private WhatsApp messages during the pandemic.

The judicial review was a desperate waste of time and money. The inquiry needs to get to the facts if the country is to learn lessons that will save lives in the future. That means it needs to be able to access all of the evidence, not just what the Cabinet Office wants it to see. 

A successful inquiry could save thousands of lives in the event of another pandemic, so why are the Cabinet Office trying to obstruct the inquiry from doing its critical work?

It’s yet another example of this Conservative Government being more interested in protecting their own reputations than they are in protecting lives. The same attitude that was so disastrous when the pandemic struck in the first place.

The good news is that the tables are finally starting to turn. Boris Johnson’s diaries and Whatsapps will now be shared with the Chair of the UK Covid 19 Inquiry. 

However, for the likes of Boris Johnson, Matt Hancock and Rishi Sunak to be held properly to account, core participants must be able to see these Whatsapps too. 

That is why we will be campaigning to make sure that the Inquiry shares all relevant evidence with our lawyers, so that we have all the tools we need to get the answers that bereaved families deserve, and which will help us to make sure lives are safer in the future.
