Make the church an essential service in the United Kingdom

The Issue

Christians know that Church is a people, not merely a place. But church buildings exist for a reason. They facilitate our corporate gatherings – making it possible for tens, hundreds or thousands of people listen to God and worship God together. Many of these buildings perform a vital  roles as spaces for communities from toddler groups to homeless shelters.

Shutting them down, stopping meeting physically and taking extreme precautions does come at a real cost. Virtual church can still be uplifting but it is not the same.

According to the statistics, there are over 32 millions Christians in the United Kingdom, and the average attendance in churches is around 5.4 millions people per year.

Churches have been banned from meeting physically since social distancing measures were introduced.

Government document has confirmed that churches would not be able to open until 4th July at the earliest and we think the importance of physical church gatherings has been underestimated and ignored and should be looked back into. We've underestimated how important the physical gathering of Christians together and other faiths is to people and how important it is to their wellbeing and social interaction.

We're very concerned about people's mental health and ability to stay connected and to support each other. The churches in the UK is a fantastic place for that and we have accepted maybe too easily that that can't happen now.

We are calling for the Government to prioritise the reintroduction of church meetings because churches have worked together to adhere to the government guidance to help reduce the spread of the pandemic prioritising the health of their congregation.

Government and communities have praised the role of the church within the community throughout the years.

the figures speak for themselves , we must make the church an essential service in the United kingdom and therefore reopen their doors, for the sake of the millions of christians in the United Kingdom.

it is the culture of millions of people, church services must resume.

Although it has been necessary to interrupt this pattern for a time, we must recover our sense of how essential our every-week church services are.
