Next Friday will be a difficult day for all of us. But it does not mean that we lay down tools and stop fighting for citizens' rights.
That's why we are organising an event in Westminster on Brexit night to keep a spotlight on our campaign for #the5million.
We will hold a silent procession through Westminster followed by a candlelit vigil.
Our aim is to remind people watching that many citizens' rights issues remain unresolved of EU citizens in the UK and Britons living in the EU.
One such issue is #DeniedMyVote.
On Friday, let's remember that:
- If EU citizens in the UK and Britons abroad had ben given the vote in the Brexit referendum, the UK would not be leaving the EU on Friday.
- 1.7m EU citizens and Britons abroad were denied the vote in the European elections in 2019 with dire consequences for the rise of the Brexit Party who will be out in force celebrating on Friday night.
- After Brexit the government may remove the rights of EU citizens in the UK to vote in local elections and renege on its promise to Britons abroad to scrap the 15year rule that prevents so many from voting.
if you cannot be with us in person on Friday evening, then do please join in symbolically and light a candle at 11pm for #the5million.
Or chip in to support our campaign
We are living through a dark chapter of British history and there is no clearer sign than the way the government has treated EU citizens in the UK or its disregard for the rights of its own citizens living in the EU.
That is why we must keep fighting for the rights of #the5million.
The best way to support our work at New Europeans is by joining as a member.
